AFS

Been experimenting with AFS and kererbos. Just finished building the AFS kernel modules for 2.6.28, hmm I wonder how many times thats been done. It went though fairly easy and hopefully I’ll be able to access AFS sooner then later. I was also, rather easily, able to get my machine to authenticate against kerberos on the works servers. So see what kind of things I can figure out and see if I can get pam to work with andrews kerberos servers.

Wish me luck

UPDATE: It failed, i’m trying it on 2.6.26 right now, but not having much luck, (probably because i’m using lenny) but i also google and saw that 2.6.28 seems to have trouble with the afs modules right now. But I’m trying it on my gentoo box running 2.6.27 and trying afs 1.4.8 and 1.5.6 on my lenny 2.6.26 box.

Yet another Update

Upgraded to Linux Mint and it has a newer version of ALSA, which uses a value of 65536 max instead of 255 and ignore the channels on my sound card for output control and gives me a master only volume control. So I’ve updated the script to fit that, with out having to change any of the input options or Xbindkey config files. So here is is. I decided to rename the old reversion to old, so if your not using the new version of alsatools, which is version 1.0.17 ? then you won’t need this, if your uses the old one but want the want to use the master channel, just change the 65536 to 255 and the 300 to 1. Mint Linux

Posted in Uncategorized on January 2nd, 2009 by Ronald Prettyman

Well my girlfriends newest laptop was running Windows, as she didn’t want to put ubuntu on it as she was afraid of not being able to get back into windows. Well after the 10th or 12th idk time she got a trojan or other type of malware she told me she wanted linux again. And I had recently heard about Mint Linux from a guy a work and thought it looked pretty cool. So I got an image yata yata yata. Well not only did Mint linux automaticly resize the partions, it was fantastic, on first boot it told me it found Proprietary Drivers for the ATI video and the Dell wireless so not only was she online in less then 20 minutes, but the enviroment is awesome, what I saw running it virtual was a joke compared to running it native on a some sweet hardware. Compiz out of the box, a completely integrated control panel, its a total vista killer, where Ubuntu failed miserably Mint picked up the pieces. I really can’t stand the way Ubuntu feels, I just like how well it works(granted I not longer use it) if I wasn’t so happy with my current Debian box, I would consider putting Mint on it. I’ll probably test it native on a seperate partition at some point when they add better KDE support. But back to Sandi’s laptop.

Its a fantastic os. Heres the best part, I mean if ANYONE reading this has ever setup just one Linux Desktop you know that basic stuff like Flash can be a royal pain in the ass. Well right out the box, flash support, I nearly cryed, well I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Also the native terminals work, all the normal stuff is their, it has a nice random motd not as nice as the one on Slackware, but its still kewl. In the end it’s definatly a solid OS for someone not so technically that is looking to start embracing the future of computers with out getting too far away from windows. I mean this has to be the most pain free dual boot I’ve ever done, its right up their with Topologilinux, while being Debian based, which of course Debian is the best OS, regardless of what variant your using, APT-GET came from Debian, and if you know what your doing you can get what ever works in Ubuntu and Mint to work in Debian.
